Once The Official Residence Of Jawaharlal Nehru, Teen Murti Bhavan Is Now A Museum & Library

Wandering across the roads of Race Course area in New Delhi, one is often struck by the elitist standards, cleanliness and tight security found there. It’s like being transported to some other part of Delhi! Be it the wide roads, well-maintained greenery or that instant moment of patriotism, it’s just capable of doing wonders to you, isn't it? The Teen Murti Bhavan is a museum and library existing in its hallowed vicinity.

Great Historical Significance

Originally, the official residence of the country’s former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the place is now known as the Nehru Memorial Museum and the library was rehabilitated into a museum-cum-library after his demise in 1964. Having once served as the dwelling place of a British commander-in-chief, which also reflects its importance during the British Raj, the building is an example of the finest British architecture. The museum is located at the Southern side of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Teen Murti Marg.

The All-Encompassing Library

Teen Murti Bhavan also houses a library, the Nehru Memorial Library, which is perhaps one of the biggest libraries in Delhi. It contains photograph archives, besides a rich collection of various history books and journals. It’s a paradise for history students, teachers and scholars, who are often seen here looking for a matter related to their research programmes, which automatically makes this space an intellectual hub, too.

What started as ‘Chacha’ Nehru’s own little literary space, with personal letters, diary entries and few books given to him by political leaders, has today turned into a full-fledged library with umpteen books, some 18,000 odd microfilm rolls, one lakh photographs and over 10,000 manuscripts.

It’s a rich knowledge resource under one roof to get your hands on books and journals related to the political, social and economic history that went into the making of the nation. The archives contain the bulk of Mahatma Gandhi’s writing, apart from private papers of other revolutionary fighters like Sarojini Naidu and R Gopal Krishnan. Now that’s quite a collection!

Come on by to pay your respects to one of India’s founding fathers, once it’s safe to do so!
