Every city has its unique grub that has ingrained in its culture deeply. The age-old admiration for some authentic, indigenous grub can be observed in Surat as well. Like Vada Pav & Mumbai are synonymous to each other, there’s a whole treasure of local dishes that are associated with Surat. 1. Locho

This amazeballs dish was curated by accident back in the day when an error was made while following a usual Khaman recipe and we’re glad for that fortunate mistake! Locho tastes divine when coupled with mint chutney & crispy sev, exudes contentment. The city’s most cherished dish is available at almost every nook & corner in town. One can visit Jani Locho House & Gopal Locho and Khaman House to chow down on this epic street food.
2. Ice Dish

The people of Surat are blessed with this oh-so-tasty sweet-treat that no one could’ve thought of. Ice Dish is swarmed with a generous dollop of cream & is fully loaded with nuts and other dry fruits. It is a modern take on the traditional Ice Gola and is probably the only revamp of an iconic dish that works for us and we’d want to savour again and again! For those with a sweet tooth, this delicacy is unmissable and you can get your hands on some at Five Star Ice Dish & Raj Ice Dish.
3. Surti Sev Khamani

Brekkie scenes & evening snacks are sorted with this popular local dish that’s prepped with the goodness of Chana Dal and a myriad of other special ingredients like chillies, ginger, sugar, spice and everything nice! Feel the zesty taste of Khamani at Gopal Khaman House and The Jani Farsan House and keep relishing it till you wanna loosen those belt buckles.
4. Ghari

Ghari is a sweet dish and an undisputed crowd-pleaser, and mind you, it ain’t for all the calorie-conscious folks out there. Made with pure ghee and stuffed with a combination of dry fruits, it’s sold almost throughout the year owing to its widespread popularity but the production doubles during the festive season. 5. Undhiyu

A legendary dish made in every household, Undhiyu is an irresistible treat that you cannot possibly miss out on. It’s inspired from the Gujarati word ‘Undhu’ which means upside down; Owing to its namesake, the dish is made with 8 varieties of specific veggies that are cooked upside down in an earthenware pot and is mixed with loads of spices that gives it a zesty mouth-feel. People often exchange the Undhiyu Casserole during special occasions and you can have a bite of this scrumptious dish at Jalaram Khichdi Restaurant and Kansar-Gujarati Thali.
6. Rassawala Khaman Dhokla

A mind-blowing variant of Khaman for which people come from far away, Rassawala Khaman comprises a classic khaman along with spicy AF gravy which is further topped with loads of sev. It’s a foodies dream come true, and it’s all because of the different flavour profiles it has to offer. This special delicacy can be found at Jalaram Rasawala Khaman and Shree Ganesh Alupuri & Rasawala Khaman so make sure you head over to these places for a foodgasm to remember!
7. Ponk Vada

This winter speciality is a much-loved dish of Surat and people crave for it as soon as the fall arrives and is best enjoyed with sev and green mint chutney. Ponk Vada derives its awesomesauce taste from the main ingredient - Jowar. You can spot this flavour-bomb at every street-food vendor but we prefer Dattatreya Ponk Vada & Green Ponk Sai Anand Ponk Vada Stall to get the most out of your gastronomic experience.
8. Collegian Chaat

As unique as the name is, the dish is equally quirky and enchanting with a to-die-for flavour that’s difficult to find anywhere else. Made with peanuts, onions, tomatoes and chillies and garnished with sev & coriander, this is famous amongst the college crowd during their bunks and breaks. One can always spot a group of teens munching on this crunchy dish. Gobble up this ah-mazing street food at Mahadev Collegian Bhel for a 10X better taste.
