Srinagar might be the capital of India’s crowning glory - Jammu & Kashmir, but it has a plethora of smaller towns that are definitely worth exploring. And since we’re always looking for an excuse to plan a long drive, why not pack a picnic basket and set out for a fun day in the lap of nature? From parks to small towns to valleys, we have curated a list of such places that you can visit in Kashmir.

1. Pahalgam

Pahalgam is one of the most beautiful places in Kashmir with the Lidder River gurgling by amidst lush green landscapes. Spend a leisurely afternoon in Betab Valley, named after the Bollywood flick “Betaab” starring Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh. You can even sit by the Lidder and enjoy the chilly water rush past your dangling feet. Enjoy a fun sledge ride at Chandanwari, the first step towards the Amarnath Yatra.

2. Gulmarg

Home to Asia’s highest cable car, Gulmarg is a much coveted destination in many people’s bucket list. The Gondola ride takes you to Kongdoori and the snow covered Apharwat. Kongdoori gives you a breathtaking view of the valley as you sip on a cup of tea. Apharwat is where all your snow world dreams come true. Enjoy a sledge ride or go skiing!

3. Yusmarg

How about living right in the MIDDLE of meadows and flower fields, surrounded by mountains?! Yusmarg actually has such magical accommodations and it is mind blowing!! If you're one of those adventurous freaks, you can also opt for trekking around here. Alternatively, pack some food and picnic near the Neel Nag lake. Flocks of sheep dotting the meadows and a small hut atop a hill, these are some of the sights you will be graced with at Yusmarg.

4. Sonmarg

Sonmarg has a low population, most of them being tourists & govt. officials, owing to the extreme weather conditions but the drive from Srinagar to Sonmarg is absolutely ethereal as you’re flanked by mountains and greenery all around! The Zojila Pass leads to Ladakh and is usually covered with a thick layer of snow. Those with nerves of steel can go for river rafting at Shutkari Bridge. Baltal Valley and Thajiwas Glacier are other places to visit in Sonmarg.

5. Aharball Waterfall

A lake that's located on the Veshu River, a tributary of the Jhelum River, in an alpine valley covered in pine & fir trees, this is the ideal location for photography sessions. It's also referred to as the Niagara Falls of Kashmir, owing to the volume of water! You can also trek to Kausar Nag from the lovely Aharbal waterfall so it’s a dual delight.

6. Kokernag

The road to Kokernag is through a rustic settlement with small huts and narrow roads but enjoyable, nevertheless. Kokernag Trout Fishery is the largest of its kind in Asia. The Kokernag garden is always brimming with flowers and locals who come here for picnics. People even bring tiny gas cylinders to make Noon Chai/ Kehwa and have a gala time with their family over tea and snacks. Most of them are kind enough to offer you some too!
