Sitting atop the Gopadhari Hill on the Zabarwan mountain range is one of the oldest temples overlooking the city of Srinagar. Regarded in high esteem by Hindus and Buddhists alike, it attracts several tourists, mainly for the breathtaking bird’s eye view of the city.

It acquired its name from Adi Shankara, the renowned Indian philosopher who once visited the temple. Once here, you'll spot a lot of inscriptions on the walls dating back to the Mughal period. The architecture has faded by the ravages of time but remains a sight to behold still!

A road canopied by tall trees leads to the temple stairs; about 250 of them *woah*! Yes, that’s a lot of effort but if you sweat it out here, the gorgeous view from the top is all yours to behold! Wooden houses, tall trees, meadows and the awe-inspiring Dal Lake; all open up to you at once. Photography is not allowed after a point so make the most of your time with your camera.

Happy exploring!
