A Treasured Experience In Srinagar - The Vibrant Floating Market @ The Iconic Dal Lake
Dal Lake is the heart and soul of Srinagar. It sustains the city being a key mode of transport and is also home to several houseboats that are a major tourist attraction. Apart from the snow capped peaks and gorgeous gardens, Srinagar can be experienced in all its effervescent glory through the floating market that is set up every morning on Dal Lake.
Akin to those found in Vietnam, Srinagar’s floating markets are a photographer’s paradise. Behold the wondrous sight of dozens of shikaras parked at different angles, laden with fresh vegetables and flowers, bumping into each other. You can even eat some kebabs whilst you shop away!
The vegetables are mostly grown in or around Dal Lake so the vendors collect them early in the morning to be sold at the market. Within 2 hours, most of their stock is sold and the leftovers are taken to different markets across the city.
If you’re lucky, you might also come across Mr. Wonderful Flower man’s boat filled with vibrant flowers.
As all good things in life require a little effort; to catch the Floating Market abuzz with activity, it is advisable to leave your houseboat by 5 AM to get a good spot. And make sure to book a shikara in advance ‘coz you ain’t getting any in the morning!
Row away!
