OotyFind Lush Gardens & A 1000 Species Of Plants Spread Across 55 Hectares At Ooty's Botanical Garden
Laid out in 1848 under the supervision of the Scottish gardener William Graham McIvor, the Botanical Gardens covers an area of around 55 hectares on the lower slopes of the Doddabetta Peak.
Divided into 6 sections, the beautiful garden houses around a thousand exotic and indigenous species of plants, shrubs, ferns, trees, herbal and bonsais. The place is filled with fascinating historic stories, from a section of the garden built by the prisoners of World War I, who were shifted to Ooty, to a 20 million old fossilized tree trunk in the centre of the garden; this place is surely a historical marvel!
The Garden is also famous for the Toda Mund Hill that gives an insight into the lives of the original tribes of Ooty - The Todas. The place also hosts a ‘Summer Festival’ during the month of May, which includes events like the Flower Show, Garden Competition and more!
Even though parking is a bit of an issue, once you arrive you’re sure to have a relaxed and rejuvenating outing in the arms of nature while watching those colourful Nilgiri birds hide in the trees and hedges!
