Ladakh is a popular place for people to travel to for a number of reasons be it the scenic beauty, the daunting passes, and the amazing wildlife it offers! If you're a wildlife enthusiast or a nature lover, here's why you need to head straight to the Hemis High Altitude Wildlife Sanctuary.  

Nestled in the eastern part of Ladakh, it is a unique wildlife destination boasting of the exotic flora and fauna it is home to. You can witness varied animals and birds roaming and flying freely in their natural habitat. 

It is home to a number of mammals including the pride of Ladakh - the Snow leopard which is the main attraction of the place. There are about 200 snow leopards in Ladakh and most of them can be found here. The Snow Leopard Trek is organised in this region itself and is very famous!

Other mammals include the Asiatic Ibex, Tibetan Wolf and the sanctuary is also the only habitat of the Ladakhi Urial in India. Besides being a wildlife hotspot, it is also a bird watcher’s dream destination as it is home to 73 species of birds including the Golden Eagle, Lammergeier Vulture, the Himalayan Griffon Vulture and others.

The sanctuary is also home to the Hemis Monastery after which it is named. Overall, the experience is enthralling - the scenic beauty it offers with its lofty mountains and Juniper forests is an added bonus!
