As the nationwide lockdown has been extended till the 3rd of May, a set of guidelines has been issued by MHA as part of the containment measure. However, we just heard that the Delhi government is thinking about opening the liquor shops in the city in a way that the prohibitory orders are not breached and here’s more on this.

Social Distancing Is The Key! | The Excise Department has been asked to submit a report and suggest some measures so that it doesn’t affect the lockdown. In Delhi, over 860 liquor shops have been shut down since March 25th and the closing of all these is expected to result in a loss of about Rs 500 crores and an increase in the sale of illicit liquor. In total, the capital earns around Rs 5,000 crores from the sale of liquor each year. Alcoholic beverage falls under the category of food as per FSSAI, that’s exempted from the national lockdown, and hence, the centre’s approval is not needed by the Delhi government to open liquor shops.

The sale of illicit liquor can create health problems amongst the public and some states have also allowed the home delivery of liquor in special cases. According to the sources, the liquor stores can be allowed to open for a fixed time period and the social distancing rules are strictly enforced and all the guidelines given by MHA must be followed. However, if the government agrees to this, then the bottling plants, warehouses and breweries shall also be opened.

The government is yet to confirm this officially, but do you guys think that the liquor shops will be allowed to reopen?
