From The Wannabes To The Hipsters, Here's Your Guide To Understanding Delhi University Fashion
Delhi University is India's most highly regarded educational institution which attracts the brightest of minds every year. The university is also an eclectic cocktail of myriad cultures and personas and the varied colleges of the university serve as a canvas on which the students showcase their fashionable side! So here we are critiquing the various trends around campus.
The Price Tag
One glance from top to bottom and all you'll see is logos of various brands plastered all over a person. They belong to the upper crust of the society and most of the time, the cost of technology in their pocket is equivalent to the monthly income of many families. Apart from branded clothes, they load themselves with expensive watches, shades and the latest sneakers. While some of them do justice to the investment of thousands of rupees, many end up looking like ugly billboards as class does not come with a price tag!
The Wannabe
They are the cousins of their rich counterparts, however, their regular haunts are hardly malls and showrooms. They frequent Sarojini Nagar and Lajpat Nagar, targeting the first copies and knock-offs of leading brands. You will find both the sexes wearing gaudy colors and all blinged up! The females would be wearing heavy makeup and matching clothes and accessories, while the men will look like something out of bad fashion magazines!
Faux Pas
You can get your daily dose of amusement by studying this particular group. Their choice of clothes is erratic and bizarre (to the core!). From skin tight clothes on a plus size frame, baggy clothes on a reed thin frame, to crotch hugging shorts (males) and hot pants that reveal way too much thus killing the fun; their spectrum of eccentricities is pretty entertaining. Have fun making fun of these guys *wink wink*!
Simpletons

This is the least fussy group and perhaps the least imaginative as well, when it comes to dressing up. Many of them belong to conservative families and come from small towns and thus have a different style statement. You will find them wearing shirts and trousers and salwar suits most of the time, however, that's not to say that they look bad. They manage to leave a good impression if you're an outsider or a teacher as they define the orthodox dressing style of a student.
Hipsters
This tribe represents a small group of people who tend to follow the counterculture. They stand out from the crowd by the way they dress and carry themselves. They have unruly or braided locks, and more often than not sport a goatee. They accessorize themselves with beads and other stuff from flea markets. Their clothes basically comprise of a printed kurta, loose cargo trousers / jeans and sandals. They draw parallels with the hippie generation of the 70’s and the 80’s.

One of the better dressed breeds of the crowd, they don’t conform to a particular style statement or dressing style. You would often find them adopting different types of styles that suit their whims and fancies. They carry off a sports jersey with the same panache as they would carry a denim jacket or a kurta or a salwar suit. Their accessories are a mix of the known labels and various street and flea markets.
So this is what makes up the DU genre of dressing and fashion! Think we missed out on a few more categories? Drop us a comment!
