Visit The Iconic Site Of Jawaharlal Nehru's Resting Place - Shanti Van

One of the most able sons of India who not only shaped India’s destiny but also played an instrumental role in framing the future of the world, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was cremated here at the Shanti Vana.

Shanti Vana or the Forest of Peace truly lives up to its name. Lush greenery, sprawling gardens, numerous trees & saplings keep the atmosphere cool & serene. The stretches of greenery run endlessly and in almost every nook & corner, a beautiful plant stands in humility to welcome you.

All the visiting dignitaries & the heads of the states include a visit to Shanti Vana as an integral part of their itineraries. As a sign of respect, one has to take off his footwear to visit the sacred site of his cremation. On 14th November of every year, which is his birth anniversary, he is remembered and honoured by the country’s people and for his ardent love for kids, and so 14th November has been recognized as National Children’s Day.

Certain prayer sessions and cultural programmes are organised in Shanti Vana to celebrate the event. The place provides you with an absolute peace & calm and has a perfect atmosphere for meditation.

All About The Man Himself

Nehru was brought up in a wealthy and an influential family having ties with the Indian National Congress & they were deeply involved in the process of making India independent of the British Rule. 

His father, Motilal Nehru, was also a notable barrister and a congressman. Jawaharlal Nehru spent his childhood in the presence of illustrious personalities who used to call upon his father. He grew up to be an atheist. A Trinity College alumnus, he was a qualified barrister. Finally, he came back to India & joined Congress as its president and had Gandhi as his mentor.

He was the very first Prime Minister of independent India & served its office from 1947-1964. He died of a stroke in New Delhi in the year 1964. His brilliant legacy was carried forward by his daughter, Indira Gandhi, who became India’s first woman Prime Minister & also his grandson, Rajiv Gandhi who held the same position.

His final resting peace is the Shanti Vana, located between the Ring Rd & the banks of River Yamuna. It is situated right next to Raj Ghat, the cremation site of his mentor Gandhi. 

Where To Locate It

It can be easily reached by a car, hired taxi, public buses or even by Metro Rail. The nearest metro station is Chandni Chowk which falls on the Yellow Line. The entry is free for all & Shanti Vana is open for all the days of the week. The preferred timings of the visit are from 5 AM-7:30 PM.
