Delhi’s economy is broadly shaped by the trade and commerce of the city; it plays a vital role in the economic growth and development of the capital of India and the major contribution can be seen coming from the heavy tax revenues. The employment growth within the city and its near-by regions (NCR) makes it one of the best commercial hubs nationwide and in the international markets.

Contributing Factors

There are several factors that account for the city’s contribution in the commercial developments. These range from geographical mapping to the historical points, modernization and better economic policies. The wholesale markets in Delhi contribute majorly to the economy. There are around 30 commodities that find big markets within the state. Also, the goods that are imported within the city and exported back again to different locations justify a huge portion of the trade.

There are several measures that determine Delhi’s contribution to the national GDP (Gross Domestic Product). Education and employment play a significant role and the agricultural and non-agricultural segments also regulate the trading that takes place.

The Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Government of NCT, Delhi provides rough estimates of the development in the trade and commerce sector. The Delhi’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) has completed around 64 years and the organization is an important source of consultancy which looks into the commercial matters and brings out legitimate grievances and notices to the Government of India and the State Government for safeguarding the principles of the trade and commerce sector in the state.

The number of workers in the commercial sector has been on a continual increase, which suggests an increased employability rate within the state. The Delhi Sales Tax Act has also seen an increased number of traders and dealers which is an indication of the improved status of Delhi’s development and growth.

Commercial Success

The city has a large number of shopping complexes and malls which again contribute effectively to the city's economy. A huge number of industries exist within the state such as finance, insurance, hotels, restaurants, real estate, builders etc. The businesses operate from the commercial centres and represent the importance and dominance of the allied and retail services and activities in the economic structure.

The malls and shopping centres also provide many sources of entertainment – such as gaming zones, cinemas, spas etc. which bring in huge amounts of revenues in the market. The improved services have provided an efficient means of commercialization.

Also, banks, commercial offices, workshops, etc. are hubs for daily trade and ensure Delhi flourishes and escalates to new heights.
