Tourist Traps or Simply Glorified? Here are 9 Most Overrated Places to Eat in Delhi

Bookmark

Isn't it often that you visit a restaurant that's been the talk of the town, however your experience ends up being nothing but disappointing! Here's our attempt at making sure this doesn't happen to you! Scroll through our list of the most overrated restaurants to avoid in the city.

DISCLAIMER: We're not declaring that these restaurants are poor, but are essentially overhyped - whether that be for their food, pricing, ambience or service.

1. Karim's

article image

A place which is hallowed by all of Delhi, Karim's is overhyped based on the owner's claim of their forefathers being the Khansamas who prepared food for the Mughal Empire itself and ever since then retaining the same flavours, which we're sure is a tough act to be following! Also, the servers are rather hassled and you need to coax them time & again regarding your previously-placed orders. We would recommend you check out the nearby Al Jawahar instead!

Location | 16, Gali Kababian, Jama Masjid

2. Parikrama

article image

Parikrama is known since ages for its revolving rooftop restaurant which moves an inch in ten minutes - simply nonsensical! A lot of customers also lamented about the quality of the dishes not being at par with the hefty prices, which is another con in Parkirama's column. Also, their staff seem quite bored to the point that they're blatantly rude and quite ignorant, which they definitely need to work on.

Location | 22, Antariksh Bhavan, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, CP

3. Khan Chacha

The rolls and kebabs for which this 'legendary' place was once famous for has lost its charm ever since it expanded from a no-nonsense takeaway street-side offering to a restaurant and we find that their offerings are quite ordinary. The restaurant is at-present cruising on its popularity and not much else. We feel Delhi's existing street vendors come with far better options than Khan Chacha's!

Location | 1st Floor, Shop 50, Middle Lane, Khan Market

4. Paranthe Wali Gali

The famous Paranthe Wali Gali is exaggerated on many accounts. Situated amidst the narrow, dusty lanes of Chandni Chowk, the place is choked with people, unhygienic and stifling to say the least. The paranthas are deep fried to the point that you can't get a grip on them and come somewhat burnt! It's also deceiving to call them paranthas and instead should be called 'Poori Wali Gali' perhaps!

Location | 1984-1985, Gali Paranthe Wali, Chandni Chowk

5. Veda

article image

This place is overhyped simply because Rohit Bal has designed its interiors and it's listed as one of the most romantic restaurants in Delhi owing to its interiors alone! A good eatery should pride itself on having an innovative menu, which Veda thoroughly lacks. We feel this place is definitely a tourist trap and the North Indian food offered here is nothing great; the service is also very slow - CP has so much more to offer!

Location | H-27, Outer Circle, Connaught Place

6. Moti Mahal, Daryaganj

article image

Your grandparents may have been a big fan of this place once upon a time, but frankly speaking, we really don't know what the fuss is all about. Yes, it's touted to carry its heritage and tradition for years on end and is known for having invented the 'Butter Chicken' itself, but as far as the other dishes are concerned, you're not missing out on much. Also the restaurant is quite small, dingy and empty half the time.

Location | 3703, Netaji Subhash Marg, Daryaganj

7. Bun Intended

article image

We admit it does have a badass name, but that hardly redeems everything else about it. It's definitely glorified for its quirky name which filters through the entire menu, but their food falls flat. We tasted their gourmet burgers after hours of waiting for our order to arrive, only to find a messy burger which was a challenge to take a bite of, but quite determinedly we picked at the ingredients which were bland to say the least. Also, you will have to shell out your entire pocket money to earn a decent meal here!

Delivery Location | Upto 8 - 10 Kms from G.K. I

8. Indigo Delicatessen

article image

Having made its mark in Mumbai, Indigo Deli was highly anticipated in Delhi, but frankly speaking, the food just doesn't live up to the hype (think soggy, wafer thin pizzas) and the service is terribly slow. Many people commented on the Delhi outlet falling far short of the original Mumbai one. If you were to go here, simply do so for their desserts or head to Mumbai to try the real deal.

Location | 3rd Floor, Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj

9. United Coffee House

article image

This restaurant is known for its old-world charm and colonial interiors which are definitely mesmerising but besides that, the place seems to have lost its charm over the years. Guests have been known to complain about the tasteless pan-asian cuisine, so we recommend you stick to just the Indian fare. It's also pretty expensive with certain dishes on the menu costing 1000 bucks apiece!
