We often hear about children going to bed on an empty stomach at night due to the sheer fact that they can’t afford the basic food items, but how many of us actually do something about it? Well, we just heard about this humble initiative that provides food to numerous needy children in Delhi and Mumbai!

Food For Thought | Travel Food Services (TFS) along with Feeding India, an NGO, has come up with this cool initiative where they donate unsold food from the airport to underprivileged kids. This initiative began in Mumbai in October 2018 and then it was started in Delhi in January 2019. The plan is to extend this act to the airports in Chennai, Goa, Kolkata and Bengaluru.

Since airports are always left with excess meals due to flights being cancelled or passengers not turning up, TFS picks them up and donates around 1,000-1,500 meals from each airport every month! A food truck comes to collect the meals every morning and sometimes even in the evenings.

The meals are thoroughly checked for their freshness and if they’re unused, once it passes the quality check by the NGO, they make sure that the beneficiary of the food is within a 5 Km radius and that it’s consumed within 90 minutes. Once all these checks are done, the NGO puts together a balanced meal comprising rice, vegetables, one beverage, curry and even desserts on some days.

These are then distributed amongst children who don’t attend schools or are from shelters and government schools that are not affiliated with the mid-day meal schemes.

Let’s hope this initiative is quickly extended to other airports as well.
