This 300-Year-Old Mosque In Chandni Chowk Is A Piece Of History That Needs To Be Preserved
We Delhiites are well aware of the fact that the city is a gem and is shrouded in rich history and culture owing to a magnificent past. And one such religious heritage place in Old Delhi turned 300 years old recently! Here’s all you need to know about it.
A Piece Of History | Shahi Sunehri Masjid is located right next to Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib and is surrounded by a multitude of shops. This mosque was built by Nawab Roshan-ud-Daulah Zafar Khan in 1721 during the reign of Muhammad Shah, in the memory of his spiritual mentor Saha Bhikh. It was previously called Sunehri Masjid Kotwali due to its proximity to the police station in the city.
There are three copper domes atop the mosque that gives its name but the plating has paled over the years. The interiors of the mosque have also been whitewashed because of which a lot of intricate carvings have been concealed. The mosque is barely visible these days due to various other buildings in the surrounding area, however, this was not the case back in the 80s when the mosque was visible.
The locals here believe that the mosque needs to be conserved and major repairs have to be done due to its prominence and crucial space in the history of the city and therefore are of the opinion that there should be a conservation plan in place in order to preserve a piece of history before it’s lost to time.
