The Oldest & Most Iconic 'Still Showing' Cinema Theatres In The Whole City

Cinema - a term that makes folks at home all nostalgic as to how movie viewing has evolved tremendously over the years and so, it’s only natural that the old cinema halls in town bring forth some happy memories for them! 

Delhi has had its share of cinema halls that have run their course and have shut down over the years - some tasted the dust in the name of development or converted into shoddy godowns, very unlike their previous avatar. Fortunately, a few iconic cinema halls still survive in the city and not just that – they are functional and commercially successful too!

Ritz

Ritz was set-up in the 1930s and was considered a ‘posh cinema’ which actually ran a bar and featured a billiards table in its earliest days. Affordably priced tickets at Rs 35 - Rs 100, the crowd here is usually uncouth with the exception of the students from nearby colleges looking for cheap screenings. The cinema hall was recently renovated and reopened with latest technology, while still retaining the charm of its old days.

PVR Rivoli

Rivoli, run by PVR, is the smallest cinema hall in Connaught Place and was established in 1934. It’s located on Baba Kharak Singh Marg and lies very near the Janpath Market, renowned for its trendy, cheap and local fare, and remains an old school favourite for many.  You will still find many people from all walks of life frequenting the place!

PVR Plaza

Plaza, managed by India’s largest multiplex chain, PVR is located near the Marks & Spencer store in H Block, Connaught Place. Good service and food characterizes this place, though it continues to be expensive. The Plaza, established in 1940, is mostly modern to look at, but it does have a heritage section with old-time wood panels and photographs gracing the walls.

Regal

84 years old, this cinema hall was set up during the colonial period and has managed to run a steady business till date. Situated in the heart of the capital, the place has been marked as a heritage site of Delhi and reminds one of a simple era gone by. The cinema hall attracted a huge crowd lining up to catch one last show here before it shut down for renovations. It’s set to make a comeback as a multiplex next year, so watch out!

Carnival Odeon

Established in 1939, Carnival Odeon offers plush seating, good service and nice food. It’s a multiplex that doesn’t wear its heritage on its sleeves, even though it has a rich colonial past - it is said to have been frequented by the then-elite of Delhi. Currently owned by Carnival Films Pvt. Ltd. and located adjacent to Khan Chacha, it lies opposite the Rajiv Chowk Metro Station’s D Block exit.

Liberty

Liberty Cinema has always provided great entertainment since it opened back in 1956. It’s a 959 seat theatre and over the years has managed to evolve with the times, providing the best movie watching experience with its state of the art facilities. With its huge screen and superlative sound system, it provides its customers with a unique movie-going experience!

Take a walk down memory lane with these cineplexes, they may have attuned themselves to the present day but the nostalgic element remains unchanged. So try to catch a show at any of these prepare to feel the feels!
