Animals deserve all the love and care in the world and moving one step further in this direction was this judgement by the Punjab & Haryana High Court!
All Animals Accorded A ‘Legal Person’ Status | The Punjab and Haryana High Court has announced that all animals in Haryana will be treated as “legal person or entity” which will grant them “corresponding rights, duties and liabilities of a living person”. Brilliant! The verdict comes a year after Uttarakhand High Court passed a similar order. Both the orders were issued by Justice Rajiv Sharma and we’re totes applauding this move!
Justice Rajiv Sharma stated that animals cannot be treated as “objects” or “property” and are “entitled to justice”. The verdict further went on to state that all animals “should be well nourished, healthy, safe, comfortable and able to express themselves without pain, fear or distress”. Justice Sharma also said that all citizens throughout the state of Haryana will act as in loco parentis (in the place of a parent) and shall be responsible for the welfare and protection of animals.
Along with this, it was also announced that draught animals should not carry more than the prescribed load while pulling a vehicle and the owners of bullock carts, camel carts and horse carts are now required to put fluorescent reflectors and animals pulling such carts must sport stripes of fluorescent reflectors to make it easy for their identification at night.
Kudos to the Punjab and Haryana High Court!
