It’s about time that we put an end to the frivolous wastage of food and this piece of news is a step towards that as by the end of this month, the government may notify about a much-needed policy for the same. We, Delhiites, might have to say goodbye to our signature big fat Delhi weddings soon!

No More Food Wastage | A policy is in the works as per the directions of the Supreme Court which will put a cap on the number of guests attending a social gathering. This move comes after the Court expressed its distress over wastage of food at such events. A 4-member committee has been formed that shall draft the policy, however, a rough draft has already been approved by the Supreme Court.

The surplus food will be distributed to the underprivileged with the help of multiple NGOs, therefore, all organisers and caterers will be expected to register themselves with the necessary organisations so that the food distribution can be managed. According to the draft policy, the owner, organiser and the caterer will have to take permissions and must hold the FSSAI license from Delhi's Department of Food Safety, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Food must be prepared according to the number of guests attending an event and the number of guests cannot exceed the guest limit approved by the Urban Local Body (ULB) for that place. If, in any case, the turnout is lower than what was expected, then the surplus food shall become the responsibility of the organiser. To make sure these rules are followed by the officers from various state, stakeholder agencies will hold frequent inspections.

If you’re wondering how will one estimate the total number of guests, then let’s break it down for you. The maximum number of guests will be obtained by dividing the area by 1.5 sqm or by multiplying the total number of cars that can be parked by 4.

We think this is a great move in order to avoid the unnecessary wastage of food. What do you think?
