Don’t you guys ever feel that tombs and all the ancient buildings and structures have innumerable deep-buried stories that often go unheard and eventually die with time and ignorance? Well, so is the case with their architecture. However, this one’s not to make you gloomy as this World Heritage Site has recently been revamped to restore its splendour.

Nila Gumbad Back With A Bang! | Built in the 16th century, located in Humayun’s Tomb Complex, Nila Gumbad’s deterioration started in the 19th century when Nizamuddin Railway Station was built adjoining the Northern wall of the monument. Later, in the 1980s a road was built separating this monument from the Humayun’s Tomb Complex and was later taken over by squatters who were then relocated between 2005-06.

Nevertheless, in 2014, an agreement was made to shift the road and include Nila Gumbad back in Humayun’s Tomb Complex. Further, Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) was asked to take the responsibility to refurbish the monument. But it wasn’t easy as it included going to Iran to find the similar blue tiles and returning back with disappointment. However, people from nearby areas were employed and they helped in the restoration work.

The ceiling was also restored that revealed magnificent artworks, the sandstone lattice screens were rebuilt and the land from the railways was also made part of the Nila Gumbad. The monument has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 2017 and now that it has been restored to its glory, more people would go visit the site.

So, why not pay this monument a visit on a bright sunny day?
