From Rajma Chawal To Chole Bhature, Here's Our Breakfast Trail Of Sadar Bazaar
Sadar Bazar - the place where you can buy everything from a hairpin to the spare parts to build an airplane. It’s one of the most iconic markets in Delhi, where everything is available for an astonishingly discounted price. You’ll be amazed at how inexpensive everyday items get once you buy them in bulk from the right location.
From stationary items to beauty products and even accessories, you’ll be saving major moolah on every purchase. The market is always filled to the brim with people in war mode and it gets hard to navigate through the minuscule lanes. Your essential pack for a day out in Sadar Bazaar must include patience and copious amounts of sunscreen because your tolerance level will definitely be challenged!
That being said, it is not a difficult experience. It’s very different from any mall or regular marketplace that you might have been to. There is a perpetual flash sale going on and the only limit to what you can buy is imposed by your budget. But the true experience of Sadar Bazaar is incomplete without the necessary breakfast snacks it so proudly dishes up!
Making our way to Tauliye Wali Gali, we found ourselves parked at one of the most popular shops in the place - Shop No. 232, which serves a whole variety of deletable snacks. We tried the most popular ones and here’s our verdict!
Shop No. 232:
Mixed Rajma Chawal
After a big family dinner, moms often take all the leftovers to make the best of everything, ladling multiple dishes in the same plate. Just like that, this plate contains chunks of paneer, spinach gravy, pickles, onions and of course, Rajma Chawal. Everything was metaphorically similar to the rainbow - distinct, yet bound together. The fragrant rice with the spicy rajma gravy on top tasted just divine! The flavours were true to what you’d expect food in Old Delhi to taste like - complex, zesty and always delicious.
Price | Rs 90
Chhole Bhature
While we gorged on our plateful of Rajma Chawal, around 50 people treated themselves to a plate of fluffy goodness with Chhole Bhaturas from the same shop. So of course, that had to be next on our list! The Bhaturas were regularly sized, but the actual star of the dish is the chhole. They tasted exceptionally good y’all! We could taste some tangy flavours with a hint of spicy masala sprinkled liberally. No wonder the recipe is a secret and people flock to this shop at all times of the day to enjoy this!
Price | Rs 65
After a hearty meal, you need some cool shakes to stave off the heat, naturally. In the same lane just a few metres ahead, you’ll bump into a small shop that whips up shakes in various flavours right in front of your eyes. All their concoctions are made from fresh fruit making the health quotient soar way high. Here’s what we sampled!
Shakes And Sweets:
The shop is called Shakes and Sweets, which tells you exactly what to expect from them. They offer Mango, Banana and Rose Shakes along with Kulfi Faluda in the evenings. During the winter months they also serve Moong Dal Ka Halwa, Gajar Ka Halwa and fat, juicy Gulab Jamuns. The prices are quite cheap, considering the level of hygiene and quantity these guys give you.
Rose Shake
After the heavy snacks, something light, refreshing and cool was sorely needed and this shake was just the answer! It tasted really good - light and airy, and was prepared using a homemade sherbet. A tall glass is ample enough to quench your thirst from shopping all day long. Defo go for this one!
Price | Rs 40 (For The Tallest Glass)
Mango Shake
The king of all summer fruit and flavours, the Mango Shake here is definitely a refreshing respite at this time of the year. This shop makes a really thick and rich Mango Shake which is a sharp contrast to the Rose Shake. A little bit more on the sweeter side, even a small glass of this was enough to fill our tummies to the brim!
Price | Rs 20 (For The Smallest Glass)
Our foodie jaunt through Sadar Bazaar left our hands full of shopping bags and our bellies full of delicious treats. Delhi is not just about malls and skyscrapers, and its true colours can be found in the streets and those little hidden finds. Come on by for a shopping-cum-stuffing your face spree!
