Of the many markets in East Delhi, Laxmi Nagar is probably the most prominent of the lot. It is a less congested locality as compared to Old Delhi but that does not mean you will have an easy time when navigating through its lanes. It remains a very popular hangout for shopaholics especially in the evenings when it comes alive.  If you enjoy shopping and are a foodie too, you should try to make it to this place.

Not only the main clothes market but also the surrounding area has developed into a major commercial hub for electronic goods. It was setup only in the 1980s but has grown in popularity and size very rapidly since then.

For Cheap yet Trendy Clothing

The market is primarily known for cheap yet quality clothing items. It offers an interesting combination of small roadside stalls and glittering showrooms. A mall has also been built near the market but that is surely not the main attraction here.

The entry to the market looks narrow from a distance but as you enter through it, you realize the vastness of the market that is spread across many smaller lanes protruding from the main street. It is a one stop destination for those who are looking for trendy items without burning a hole in their pockets.

Indian wear, western wear, bridal wear, fashion accessories, bags, teddy bears, jewellery, footwear and everything else you can imagine can be found here. It is only up to you to surf through the shops and bargain your heart out.

While the main bazaar is mostly about apparels, if you check the shops along the main road, you will also find a whole new range of electronic goods. Some of these shops sell everything from branded gadgets to cost effective Chinese imitations. There are some books and stationary shops too nearby, especially targeted at the students.

Something for the Foodies Too

Laxmi Nagar market is a delight for the foodies. Especially during summers, it offers a variety of items to sip, chew or simply gulp down.

Try a chuski or visit a soda shop with diverse flavours and colours. Do not forget authentic kulfis and lassis too. Many of them serve not using plastic cups or glasses but traditional clay cups or kulhads, thus enhancing the “Indianness” of the experience.  In case you need snacks, you can try the shops near the Metro Station, just outside the main market.

Reaching Laxmi Nagar Market

Those who live in East Delhi should be naturally familiar with this market. Others can just reach the Laxmi Nagar Metro Station on the Blue Line. The market is not more than a five minutes’ walk from there and the area is also well connected with other parts of Delhi by regular bus service. Visit the Laxmi Nagar Market not merely to shop but to soak in the spirit of a traditional Indian marketplace that organized retail fails to provide.
