Delhi is in the news for all the right reasons it seems, and we’re loving it! So here’s what’s been up in the city off late - the Indian Railways is planning to build another bridge over the river Yamuna. Read on for more deets!

What’s Happening? | In a bid to speed up the movement of trains over the Yamuna river and decongest the busy Ghaziabad-New Delhi rail corridor, Indian Railways has proposed another rail bridge over the river.

If you've travelled between Ghaziabad and New Delhi stations by train, you must already know (and groan) how long the entire passage takes, thanks to the congestion on that route. Urgh! But it’s time to heave a sigh of relief people! This proposed newbie 600 metre long bridge near the Nizamuddin rail bridge will provide an additional path for trains bound for the national capital. These trains will travel at a speed of 100 kms per hour on the bridge.

The Railway officials have said that the construction of this bridge will mostly start by year-end. Unfortunately, it’s construction is gonna involve cutting down about 2,000 kikar trees on the riverbed and we aren’t too happy ‘bout that TBH. Meanwhile, the centuries-old Yamuna Rail Bridge, which is also called Loha Pula, will be replaced by a double-line bridge and is expected to be thrown open by March next year. The bridge has been subject to floods as the Yamuna hits the danger mark during monsoons.

Although the old Yamuna Rail Bridge is getting a complete revamp, the road bridge which is a part of the rail bridge will continue operations and its maintenance has been handed over to the Delhi Government by the Indian Railways.

The newbie bridge is gonna be an all-weather one where train movement will not be affected by flooding, and this is seriously impressive! Kudos, guys!
