A Market Full Of Stylish Restaurants & Chic Boutiques, Hauz Khas Market Is A Hub Of The Rich Elites
South Delhi is a hub of social activity, what with all its hip markets, malls, restaurants and galleries. Quite admittedly, most of the city's elite crowd is found here. Markets of the likes of Hauz Khas market here have a milieu of swanky restaurants, fashionable stores and various shopping options in total contrast to a number of utility and roadside shops and eateries as well.
Amongst Style and Fashion
The crowd most commonly seen hanging around the Main market of Hauz Khas comprises of young fashionistas and designers. Understandably so, since National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), the best fashion institute in the country, lies in the immediate vicinity. But the market actually boasts of nothing too high-end or fashionable. If anything, it houses a small eatery called Grub Pub, which offers Chinese food, yet another, by the name of Jaisons and a Cafe Coffee Day Lounge, which is said to be one of the first of its lot to have opened in Delhi.
Another store of repute here is Tatsat. They call themselves 'a socially conscious store' and stock up on handcrafted products like jewellery, candles, handloom clothing, incense, bags and cosmetics straight from the rural artisans and NGOs that work for their cause.
Tatsat serves as a bridge between the marginalized craftsmen and the market, and no child labour or labour exploitation goes into producing their goods, thus making it a popular choice of lifestyle shopping for a lot of people.
A Mix & Match
The market has the widest variety of shops and stores that one can go looking for. It harbours two outlets of a popular organic store called Navdanya, in addition to a number of gourmet stores offering groceries from all over the world, a local meat shop and an outlet of Big Apple as well. The place has innumerable pharmacies and clinics too. In the name of brands, you'll spot tiny showrooms of Adidas, Tissot and Titan, ironically right across from shops selling locally made footwear.
A highlight of the place, however, is a large number of jewellery shops and photo studios dotting the area and there are a handful of beauty salons to attract the young crowd. The market also has a number of banks and a post office. Nearby is Hispania, one of the best Spanish language institutes in the city. The place is also home to dry cleaners and hardware shops, tent houses, an electrical appliances store, an electronics shop and another dealing in money transfers.
The market unfortunately is located on a busy road and is usually bustling with people. Parking in and around the area is hard to find, more so because it is in the middle of a residential area and one cannot park in front of the houses either. A better way to get here would be by the metro, with Hauz Khas and Green Park stations both within a kilometre's range. It is located in close proximity to the Green Park, Yusuf Sarai and Aurobindo Markets too.
