Delhi, as a city, is famous for its many markets - big & small and every market has some history & a unique characteristic attached to them. These markets are placed all over Delhi & offer a very rich local shopping experience. One such market located near Connaught Place (CP) is the Gole Market. The name literally translates to mean the 'circular market'; it is actually octagonal in structure & is a pretty small building structure. Sir Edward Lutyens, the father of New Delhi, built Gole Market along with other marvellous monuments & buildings of Delhi; however, a lot has changed since its inception in 1921.

Commonplace Sightings

Originally, this market was built to accommodate the needs of the residents of the nearby government colonies; the area is interconnected with its many arterial roads & you can get a glimpse of the colonial architecture looking at the surrounding buildings & roads; however, today it offers a range of amenities, to please all kinds of shoppers. Traffic jams are common during peak hours, ie, mornings & evenings, at the roundabout which connects CP to other areas of West & South Delhi.

There are butcher shops selling freshly-made frozen meat, fish & chicken in raw form of minced meat, meatballs, Kababs & Salami; you can buy these items & impress your guests while grilling & barbecuing them in the convenience of your own backyards.

Food Galore

May be because of the Bengali residents living near this area, the market inhabits two Bengali sweet shops that serve all sorts of Bengali sweets & snacks; most popular ones being the sweetened milk preparations like Rasgulla, Chamcham & Sandesh and these shops also offer Indian vegetarian meals.

There is a small shop by the name of Odeon Sweets offering the tastiest Chole Bhature, with the Chole literally melting in your mouth, the sweets & Chaats available here won’t disappoint you either. The circular island of the market has several shops serving delicious Tandoori & Mughlai dishes; most of these shops still exist from the earliest times. Some favourites are Tandoori Chicken, Afghani Chicken, Fish Fry & Seekh Kababs, all of these items go great with drinks, which is why during evenings it is very hard to find a place to sit in at these restaurants.

Varied Products

This market has many chemist shops selling Homeopathic & Ayurvedic medicines; the shopkeepers are knowledgeable of the effects of these medicines & can guide you through them. There are also some shops selling antique items from pre- & post-independence historic times.

A famous tobacco shop sells all sorts of tobacco products from across the world; ranging from the most expensive Cuban cigars to loose cigarettes. If you are looking for pets, the live pets store can help you with a range of mammals, birds & fish. Other amenities include travel agency offices, foreign exchange dealers, auto-repair shops & tailors. It won’t be wrong to say that this market is a one-stop shop to cater to all your whims & fancies.
