Delhi University is the ultimate dream! That’s also because along with academics, the university places equal emphasis on extracurricular activities. With so many sprightly and highly active societies, the colleges of DU offer a spectrum of opportunities.
For all aspirants, we’ve made a sample list of the societies you will find in the university, so be it dramatics, dance or debates you can find your calling and hone your talents by joining any of these!

1. The Model United Nations Society

The Model United Nations is a mock representation of the United Nations and in a short span of time has become an integral part of every college’s ECA calendar. They draw a lot of exemplary debaters who argue on various issues concerning the world in simulated councils of the UN. Delhi College of Arts and Commerce is the mecca of MUNs and its society MUNitions is well-regarded, while the MUN societies of LSR, SRCC and JMC are also gaining prominence!

2. The Debating Society

The debating societies or deb socs, as they are popularly known as, are one of the most sought after and oldest societies in most DU colleges, having had many illustrious members in the past. 
The English Deb Soc of Hans Raj College is one of the most reputed societies of the university. The deb soc of Kirori Mal, St. Stephen’s, Kamla Nehru’s Crossfire and Dyal Singh’s Entourage are a force to reckon with as they have done exceptionally well in various competitions!

3. The Dramatics Society

The dram socs are some of the most prestigious and active societies in DU. These societies conduct nukkad nataks as well as stage plays and you will find the most promising talent in these societies. Players, the dramatics society of Kirori Mal is one of the oldest and the best campus theatre group of the country, having illustrious alumni such as Amitabh Bachchan, Shakti Kapoor and Satish Kaushik. 

The dram soc of Hindu College, IBTIDA, founded by director Imtiaz Ali and the dramatic societies of St. Stephen’s and LSR have the most promising bunch of artists as its members - make sure you sign up for these!

4. The Film Society

Encouraging the art of filmmaking and its study, film societies are slowly but surely mushrooming in the colleges with The Cine Club of St. Stephen’s College leading the way. Sri Venkateswara College, Gargi College and LSR also have prominent film societies. These societies hold regular film screenings, panel discussions and debates on cinema. They conduct inter-college competitions that witness the best submissions across societies.

5. The Photography Society

The photography societies of various colleges are among the most popular ones in the age of DSLRs, powerful mobile cameras and digital cameras. The societies organize photo-walks, camera workshops and hold annual events. Clicks of DCAC, Vivre of Hindu and Iris of Gargi College are the most competent of the lot and showcase some wonderful snaps during their annual events!

6. The Fashion Society

The fashion socs of the university colleges are the most innovative and glamorous societies around. The students pick up random clothes from the market and design their own creations. The Fashion Society of Hansraj College and Glitz, the fashion soc of Kamla Nehru College have brought most laurels to the university. So if you know a friend who’s a budding fashionista then lead them to these!

7. Creative Writing Society

Almost all colleges of the university now have a creative writing society, be it in English or Hindi. They organise workshops, competitions and annual fests to foster writing talent. They regularly hold meetings to discuss and appreciate the written word, thereby encouraging budding writers. Gargi College’s Quilluminati, Ramjas College’s Wordcraft, Hansraj’s Ostraca and KNC’s Expressions are very popular.

8. Dance Society

The most thriving societies of any college, dance societies are the show stoppers during college festivals. Further branched out into Western dance societies, Indian classical dance societies and choreography societies, they provide a great platform to learn and perform. If you’re interested, get ready for rigorous rounds of auditions and excruciating hours of practice but it’s all worth it. Misba, the dance soc of GGSC, Mudra of JMC, and Venky’s Verve are the best of the lot!

9. Music Society

For those with a good ear and fine talent for music, a society dedicated to music can be found in every college. The societies are categorised into Western music and classical Indian music societies, along with bands too that are extremely dedicated to their respective genre. 

They participate in various competitions organised in all major universities in the country, providing great exposure to their members. Dhwani of LSR, Musoc of KMC and Miranda House’s Orpheus are the leading names in this category.

10. Eco Clubs

Extremely essential, given the current state of our environment, most colleges have dedicated clubs that work towards taking socially responsible steps to care for the environment. They organise regular clean-up drives and projects that are ecologically conscious both on and off campus. The eco clubs of Gargi College, Acharya Narayan Dev College and Lady Irwin College have taken up impressive initiatives to create ecological awareness!

11. Fine Arts Society

The fine arts societies in colleges promote various forms of art. They hold workshops and competitions to propagate the importance of art in our lives. Encouraging creativity, these societies are the backbone of college aesthetics and honing talent in the related field. Melange of Ramjas college, Luminoso of KNC and Hues of Gargi are fostering some great talent out there! 

12. NCC

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a responsive, learning and continuously evolving organization. It helps instill principles of patriotic commitment, contribution to national development, respect for diversities in religion, language, culture, ethnicity, lifestyle and habitat. The NCC provides exposure to cadets in a wide range of activities, with a distinct emphasis on social services, discipline and adventure training. This society offers you comradeship and a distinct appreciation for discipline, which are the building blocks for success!
