If you’ve just landed a new job in a faraway city or are going away for college, you must have your own doubts, anxiety and a certain level of excitement that takes up permanent residence in the corners of your mind. So, just to reassure y’all that you’re not the only one out there constantly fretting, here are 9 relatable thoughts that we all have when moving to a new city!
1. “Need To Start Saving For The Move”

Ahh, the age-old dilemma - how much to save for a shift? Let’s just say, how much ever we think it’s going to cost, it will come out to twice as much when we get done with the shift, so don’t let it come as a shock. Keep a few extra bucks handy for just this kind of rainy day. While shifting, we need to consider moving costs, travel expenses, rent for the new house, and so much more! So, be prepared to pay through your nose for those initial days!
2. “It’s Impossible To Find The ‘Perfect Place’ - Will I Remain Homeless?!” *Sob*

Haven’t we all faced ruthless landlords charging too much for a one-bedroom apartment that you can’t afford, much less want to live in because of the extremely ‘not-so-pretty’ conditions? We’ve all considered whether we would eventually have to end up living on the streets, and even when you do find a decent enough place to call home, it’s no fairytale castle, that’s for sure!
3. “I Didn’t Know I Owned So Much Useless Stuff” - While Packing

It’s exactly when you’re packing all your stuff, ready to move, with a given weight bar hanging over your head quoted by a moving company, that you realise just how much junk you seem to own. Your 5 pairs of shoes start looking like you’re obsessed with footwear, and let’s not even get started on all those journals and stationery you seem to own, that were just ‘too damn pretty’ to use!
4. “What Are The Chances Of Getting Lost In The City?”

Yup, we’ve all wondered at least once whether we’re mature enough to handle a move on our own, and it doesn’t matter how big or small a city is, we’ll practically make up the most ridiculous scenarios in our heads that will end with us lost in the city somewhere with no way to knowing how to get back to our homes. Well, there’s a simple solution to that - always have your phone juiced up and connected to the internet, and do keep a pocket map with you at all times before you’re familiar with the city!
5. “Everything Is Going To Be A New & Exciting Adventure!”

While moving can be scary, it is also when we’re jumping with excitement at the prospect of new environments, colleagues, friends and a completely new place to explore. It is also a validation of the fact that you’ve matured enough to handle complications that come with adulthood and even though you’re not acing the adulting game (who even is?!), you’re at least getting a solid B+ and that’s all that matters!
6. “I Hope I Don’t Get A Place With Really Nosy Neighbours”

As if moving to a new city wasn’t hard enough, you also need the freedom to be able to express yourself with confidence. And, the last thing you want to do is worry about people being all up in your business when all you wanted was a nice and peaceful life away from the drama! Well, we’re not always lucky to have perfect neighbours who keep to themselves, and that one annoying aunty or landlord, who wants to know everything you’re doing or everywhere you’re going, can sure as hell become a pain in the neck overtime!
7. “Time For A Complete Lifestyle Overhaul!”

This Is A Representative Image
Haven’t we all woken up one day with a resolution to start making the right decisions and change up all our unhealthy habits with great lifestyle choices that might give us better skin, keep us hydrated and maybe allow us to pick up a new skill or hobby that will benefit us. Well, the desire to embark on a self-transforming journey becomes more urgent when we’re on our way to a new city, ready to give our entire life an overhaul, and maybe, JUST maybe this time we might actually be able to stick to it!
8. “I’m Going To Be The ‘Super Independent, Making Friends Left & Right’ Kinda Person!”

This Is A Representative Image
When it’s time to shift, it seems that we all get bitten by the ‘confidence bug’ and our self-esteem seems to skyrocket exponentially in the first few weeks. It’s more of an extended adrenaline rush that seems to last for days but fizzles out as soon as we get used to the city and the new people. It might be the comfort that comes from knowing a place, but that initial confidence surge is pretty damn great, to be honest!
9. “New Place - Check, Packed Everything - Check, Figured Out Commuting - Check, Made a Bucketlist - CHECK!”

This Is A Representative Image
A new place always calls to be explored, and making a bucket list of places to visit and things to feast on in the streets of the new city is definitely the first thing an excited newcomer does. We’re no different, after all, what’s the point of shifting if you’re not planning to tough it out while roaming the streets and burning to memory all the coolest hotspots the new area has to offer?! So, the next time you’re searching for a cool new place to chill at with a new friend, you know exactly where to go!
How many of you found these super relatable, and if you’re recently moving to a new city, all we have to say is - we hope you avoid nosy neighbours for your own mental peace. Ciao!
