We are all well acquainted with the epic historical drama, Mughal-E-Azam. We grew up watching this grand film with our parents, as the tragic love story between Prince Saleem played by Dilip Kumar and Anarkali played by Madhubala surfed the waves of the trials and tribulations crafted by the emperor Akbar. This film was a treat to watch, with the historical Mughal palaces shimmering in the hit songs such as ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya’. Watch it again to remember Dilip sir in one of his greatest performances.

While we grew up in an era where Shahrukh Khan was our Devdas, Dilip sir was the original one. This Bimal Roy film was released in 1955 and was a superhit even then. It also won Dilip Kumar a Filmfare and is often touted as one of his best performances. We are all familiar with the story - how a lovelorn Devdas succumbs to alcoholism due to his separation from his beloved childhood friend, Paro. It is one of his best-known tragedies. Have you watched the original Devdas?

Another one of Mr Kumar’s chart-topping movies, Madhumati has a unique plot. Well, it is one of Bollywood’s first few re-incarnation dramas, and obviously, we love these plotlines. It’s about 2 men taking shelter in a rickety mansion during a storm, and how one of them (Dilip Kumar) suddenly becomes aware that he has visited this mansion in a past life! He then recounts the tale of Anand (himself) a young city-slick metrosexual man falling hopelessly in love with a tribal woman named Madhumati. Does that seem interesting to you? Find out for yourself!

Before there was Karan Arjun, Seeta Aur Geeta, Judwaa, Satte Pe Satta, there was Ram Aur Shyam. A Comedy film based on Bollywood’s favourite storyline, identical twins, Ram Aur Shyam was a treasure because it showcased the acting prowess of Dilip Kumar. Playing the double role of twins with hugely contrasting personalities, this was one of the best roles of Dilip Kumar, ever. While Ram was a shy and nervous man, Shyam was mischievous, brave and brought out laughter and anger in contrast to Ram. Both were portrayed with utmost ease by the legend that is Dilip sir, which makes this film a highly engaging & one of a kind watch.

Shakti is where two of Bollywood’s most revered icons - Amitabh Bachhan and Dilip Kumar came together. Written by the iconic Salim-Javed duo and directed by Ramesh Sippy, the film was about the complicated relationship of a father and son, where the father is a stoic and overzealous police officer and his troubled son Vijay who becomes a mafia don. For this film’s emotional sequences, Dilip Kumar drew memories of his brother's death - a testament to his method of acting. The film is living proof that both of these masters of their arts are so fine at what they do!

Now, it probably comes as no surprise, but Naya Daur was also one of the chart-topping hits of Dilip Kumar. It won Dilip Kumar his third consecutive Filmfare Award in the Best Actor category, and fourth overall. This BR Chopra classic was set against the backdrop of post-Independence India which was run on Nehruvian Socialism. In one of Dilip Kumar's finest films, he played the role of a spirited Shankar, and unlike his other roles, smiled a lot and displayed exuberance. The film also had 2 unforgettable songs - ‘Ude Jab Jab Zulfen Teri’, and ‘Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawano Ka’.

Again, this star-studded film cast not just Dilip Kumar, but also Raj Kapoor and Nargis. Raj Kapoor was a contemporary and a huge part of Bollywood, a legend in himself. The two actors gifted us with Andaz, which was about unrequited love. In Andaz, Dilip Kumar’s character fell in love with Neena, played by Nargis, which was not reciprocated. Mr Kumar is said to have acted with a seething intensity in this film, and we gotta see for ourselves!

This film is important because it was the film that won Dilip Kumar his first ever Filmfare Award, which was newly constituted then. He has won a total of 7 Filmfare for best actor thereafter and has even been honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. Anyhoo, this film sees the rise of a poverty-stricken and alcoholic Shankar to a wealthy man who again moves towards the path of self-destruction! Do you want to watch it?

The tragedy king is said to have suffered from depression due to portraying many heavy and tragic roles, so some of his lighter roles can be seen in the movies Azaad, Kohinoor, and Aan.
We send off this ‘Kohinoor ' of a person with great love, admiration and respect.
