This one hits too close to home and many of us tend to read something that’s a reflection of our current situation. Hugely popular currently, this one made it to our list. The story is set in an almost post-apocalyptic world after a fictional Georgia Flu pandemic wipes out around 99% of the human population. This dark and gritty read follows a handful of survivors forming a group of entertainers called the Traveling Symphony. And, when they’re pitted against one another for survival, what will they do? Read the book to find out!

The Master And Margarita is a modern Russian classic written by author Mikhail Bulgakov in the Soviet Union between 1928 and 1940 during Stalin's regime. This satirical dark comedy takes place in Moscow when the devil himself descends with an unclad witch and an immense talking black cat with a fondness for chess and vodka and wreaks havoc on the land. The manuscript described the life in Stalin’s Moscow with such detail that it could not be published in the author’s lifetime and later a censored version was published in Moscow magazine in 1966. An intriguing read, you’re sure to love this one!

5. Circe - Madeline Miller

Now, let’s leap into the world of Greek mythology but from the viewpoint of one of the lesser-known goddesses, Circe - the daughter of Helios, the sun god. This dazzling novel follows the personal recount of the goddesses life and recasts one of the most infamous figures from the Odyssey as a bold and heroic goddess in her own right. Ridiculed as a child for being powerless, Circe discovers her flair for witchcraft much later in life and how she embraces herself after being shunned by the other gods. A beautifully smooth read, we’d surely recommend this one!

6. The Push - Ashley Audrain

This gripping psychological thriller is a wild ride, one that won’t let you sleep until you crack the mystery wide open. The novel delves into the life of a mother who wants what’s best for her child but soon realises that her child might not be what she had always hoped for. A gripping and clever read, it will make you question yourself on the bonds of motherhood and whether what you’re reading is actually happening or is it all in the head of the protagonist! This sinister read will keep you on the edge of your seat and will surely keep you up at night!

7. Animal Farm - George Orwell

Animal farm is such a classic and we couldn’t include this masterpiece! This simple tale of talking animals plotting a coup against the farmers for mistreatment and overexploitation is such a brilliant political satire on the current situation in the world, even though it was allegedly referring to the events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and is a critique of the Stalin-led government. So, everyone who has ever dismissed the book as a simple fairytale for adults, you’re sadly mistaken! Time to give it a read again and understand the nuanced critique and undercurrent of a revolution against tyranny to totalitarianism in the storyline!
