Our scorching days are filled with constant WFH meetings, calls and sitting behind the laptop working, so we don’t exactly get time to sit and binge-watch lengthy shows or series that go on for season after season. This is why, if committing to a lengthy series isn’t your cup of tea, we got just the list of Indian and International shows for you that are short, well written, not more than one season long, and leave an impact! This one’s an anthology series that consists of around 7 episodes and each episode narrates a different story and covers themes like domestic abuse, domestic dilemmas, digital romances, schoolyard bullies and more. Each episode is not more than 20 minutes long, but trust us when we say that these will be the most impactful 20 minutes of your time!

2. Taj Mahal 1989

Taj Mahal 1989 tells the story of a number of individuals, old and young, who find love in Lucknow back in the year 1989.  Set around Lucknow University, this short series follows these couples on their journey of budding romance, love and the different perspectives, as they view the concept of love and affection differently. Dear horror lovers, this one’s especially for you. Starring Radhika Apte, this Indian horror series is set in ‘the near future’, where due to political unrest, military detention camps have been set up to contain prisoners, and an interrogator is on the mission to find the truth. With a new prisoner arriving in the detention cells, the plot takes on an eerie tone and we’re given incredible visuals and CGI. Watch this for ‘em scares!

Here’s an Indian crime thriller that definitely made us feel the impact of a powerful script and attention to details. The plot revolves around a murder trial where the main suspect Aditya Sharma, who seems to be falsely accused of the crime, doesn’t seem to remember anything from the night of the murder. Scam 1992 is an Indian crime drama short series - this one’s based on the 1992 stock market scam committed by several stock market brokers, including Harshad Mehta and is an adaptation of journalist Sucheta Dalal’s & Debashish Basu's 1992 book, The Scam: Who Won, Who Lost, Who Got Away. With brilliant screenplay dialogues and a killer performance by the actors, you’ll end up finishing this short series in a jiffy!

Unorthodox is a brilliant German-American Netflix Limited series based on the autobiography of Deborah Feldman's, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots. Filmed in both English and Yiddish languages, the plot revolves around the self-discovery of the protagonist who runs away from her immensely orthodox community in New York to Germany and how she discovers herself and a life beyond the constraints of her community. This one is a beautiful cinematic experience that you can’t miss out on!

8. Alias Grace

Alias grace is based on the popular novel by Margaret Atwood of the same name. The story revolves around a poor Irish immigrant who ends up as domestic help for an upper-class Canadian family. She is then convicted of the murder of her employer along with the stable hand and is sentenced to prison. What follows is a number of oddball interactions with a psychologist who tries to piece together the events that lead up to her imprisonment. Based on true events that took place in the 19th century, this one’s a must-watch!

This American true-crime miniseries follows five coloured teens from Harlem who are falsely accused of the brutal attack, rape and murder of a jogger in Central Park. Set in 1989 the story follows their subsequent trial and prosecution of the accused. You will cry buckets of tears while watching this one so keep a tissue handy. A true cinematic gem, you need to watch this one for sure!

10. Maniac

We now dip our hands into the realm of psychological thrillers and this one seems to have a brilliant cast! Starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, this dark comedy revolves around two strangers who sign up for a mind-bending pharmaceutical trial believing that it will solve all their problems but find out that their lives soon become interconnected through their memories, dreams and sub-consciousnesses. Find out what happens when the main computer that runs the test goes rogue and threatens to destroy the entire program?!

11. The Serpent

The Serpent is a recent limited series that is based on the horrible crimes of the serial killer, Charles Sobhraj, who used to target the young hippies between 1975 to 2000 all throughout Thailand, Nepal and other Asian countries. The plot takes you through how he used to steal his victim’s identity and how when at the height of his crimes, a  dutch diplomat begins investigating the murders and his subsequent capture. The plot will take you through a finger biting journey and will keep you guessing, so go on and start watching this masterpiece!

12. The Queen’s Gambit

The Queen’s Gambit is a period, coming-of-age drama based on Walter Tevis's 1983 novel of the same name. The story follows the incidents in the life of the chess prodigy Beth Harmon, who slowly but surely rises to the top of the chess world, all the while struggling with drug addiction and dependency on alcohol that started from her time in the orphanage where they used to dispense daily tranquillizer pills to the young girls. A brilliant performance by Anya Taylor-Joy, you’ve got to watch it for her acting, if not for the amazing plot!
