1. Golden Temple

Nestled in Bylakuppe, home to one of India's largest Tibetan settlements, the Namdroling Monastery is an important site of history, culture, education and spirituality. Rightly called the Golden Temple due to its exquisitely gilded architecture, this monastery is a must visit especially during the prayer hour which begins at 1 PM. For a more exclusive experience, head here in February to witness the festivities of the Tibetan New Year.

2. Igguthappa Temple

This serene shrine devoted to the Coorgi god of rain and harvest, Lord Igguthappa, is located high amidst the hills near the small town of Kakkabe. The muted architecture and peaceful environs make for a tranquil day at this temple. You can also hike to the Kakkabe falls nearby as the natural allure of this place is irresistible.

3. Sera Monastery

Yet another elusive site of great impetus, situated within Bylakuppe, is the Sera Monastery which also functions as a monastic university that aims to impart the Buddhist teachings of compassion and peace besides other practical knowledge to nearly 3000 monks. Known for its vibrant frescoes and “thangka” paintings the walls of this monastery come alive with vivid depictions of different Buddhist mythologies.

4. Talacauvery Temple

Atop the Brahmagiri hill in Coorg, lies the source of the sacred river Kaveri known as Talakaveri or Talacauvery. The temple’s architecture is simple, complete with a shrine and a large tank where the river originates and devotees often bathe in these holy waters that are famed to have miraculous healing powers. This holy site of pilgrimage hosts a most breathtakingly beautiful panoramic view of the rolling hills and is best visited between September and May.

5. Bhagandeshwara Temple

Located in Bhagamandala, a scenic 30km drive from Madikeri, the Bhagandeshwara temple is famous for its elegant Keralite architecture, especially its intricately carved ceiling rich with mythological tales. The confluence of the rivers Kaveri, Kanike and Sujyothi are another wow factor that add to the natural beauty of the place. October is a great time to visit as you also get to witness the celebration of the Hutari festival.
