5 Most Haunted places In Chennai That Will Give You Goosebumps.

Chennai has always been the talk of the town for its beautiful beaches, flamboyant architecture, and the fast-paced developing urbanity; but with nightfall, it has pockets that are known to become playgrounds for some sinister paranormal activity. From the ghosts of a small girl, refusing to leave her home to that of a wandering spirit of a jilted lover. So, here’s our list of places in the city that you either might want to avoid or want to visit all the more with your own team of Ghostbusters!

1. Demonte Colony

This colony, named after one of its earlier residents, John De Monte, a businessman leading an unhappy life with his mentally-disabled wife and a son who passed away at a young age because of unknown circumstances. In the present day, this entire colony, consisting of rows of houses, remains deserted and dilapidated as it’s believed that the entire colony was abandoned after number complaints from residents about strange happenings such as pet disappearances, doors being locked and unlocked on their own and strange noises late at  night. Some even claim they saw the ghost of De Monte walking in the moonlight. Don’t believe it? You can always check for yourself... If you have the guts. *smirk*

2. Madras Christian College

We’ve all, at least once in our lifetime, sat down with friends in the college hostel and swapped ghost stories to freak each other out. Though some of those stories might be made up, this one definitely holds some truth. According to reports, a boy had committed suicide in the Herber’s hall of the Madras Christian College after being jilted by his lover. Students believe that the boy’s spirit still lingers around the hallways, leaving taps open, scaring stray passersby with the sound of footsteps, and stealing cricket balls from unsuspecting kids in the playground. *Woah* Talk about frustrated, failed romance!

3. Broken Bridge

A popular spot for Shooting movie scenes during the day, this broken bridge in Besant Nagar, constructed over the Adyar River fell to ruins many decades ago due to heavy rainfalls and was never repaired ever since.  This run-down bridge has been labelled as one of the most haunted places in Chennai as reported by various locals. The fishermen living in the area have claimed to have heard screams of a woman in the wee hours of the night and believe it to be the spirit of the women murdered in the area. Another reason that makes this bridge ten times spookier is the fact that several unidentified bodies have been recovered from this site, leading to a ban on visitors. *Brrr* Did you also feel that chill up your spine?

4. East Coast Road

This two-lane road, connecting Chennai and Puducherry, is a driver’s delight during the daylight hours but with the setting of the sun, it turns into the literal definition of ‘highway to Hell’. This road is known to be haunted by a shape-shifting ghost that takes the form of a toddler, a small girl, or a cat (according to the accounts of various travellers). The ghost’s MO is startling the drivers, enough for them to lose control of the wheel by appearing out of thin air with glowing eyes. A word of caution: always be on high alert while travelling on this road.

5. F2 Building, Valmiki Nagar

The apartment in question is located around 15 km from the Chennai airport and remains uninhabited for the past decade. It is rumoured that the owner’s daughter had committed suicide in the apartment and ever since her spirit refuses to leave the house. The neighbours have often seen the apartment doors open and close on their own in the dead of the night and have heard sounds like screams and sobs coming from the windows of the apartment. What’s eerier is the loss of cellular network and flickering of the phone screen when one walks past this house. You wouldn’t want to be caught anywhere near this locale at night.

The faint-hearted are advised to visit some of the beaches and historical sights instead, but for those, a little braver, go ahead and satisfy the ghostbuster in you!
