1. Golden Temple

For all those visiting Amritsar, this is definitely the place to start! The Golden Temple is the most sacred, peaceful and religious center for the Sikhs. The temple gets the ‘golden’ in its name from its gold plated domes which is a sight worth seeing! And a visit at night is a must when it’s all beautifully lit up with the reflection of the Golden Temple on the sarovar!

2. Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum, named after the Lion of Punjab has a beautiful design and is surrounded by the famous Rambagh Gardens popular for its statue of the legendary king with his horse. It is known for its rare and priceless collections, particularly paintings, weapons, armour, manuscripts and coins. What makes it a tourist attraction is the light and sound show which creates the feel of a real war situation with booming sound effects.

3. Jallianwala Bagh

Jallianwala Bagh is famous for one of the most tragic yet landmark events in the history of India. This is where the Massacre of 1919 took place. The garden houses a memorial built in honour of the massacre victims. The portion of the wall with bullet marks along with the well is preserved as a memorial. A light and sound show is hosted here every evening which makes it a must visit when in Amritsar.

4. Hall Bazaar

Hall Bazaar is one of the oldest markets in Amritsar and it lies on the way to the Golden Temple. This shopping hub of Amritsar comprises of numerous streets lined with a row of shops that offer things like clothes, books, jewellers, footwear and of course food stalls. It’s a great place to get your hands on some amazing juttis and phulkaris. Apart from this, the market offers many other exciting items which make for the best of souvenirs!

5. Wagah Border

From shouts of patriotism, to the powerful show put up by the BSF, a visit to Wagah is a gripping experience. It is home to the Radcliffe Line, which is the demarcation between India and Pakistan and was drawn during the partition of India in 1947. The border has a huge arch and there are gates of both the countries. Seating arrangements are enabled for the spectators so that they can watch the ceremony. The illustrious lowering of the flags ceremony takes place here at the Wagah Border which attracts crowds in large numbers.

6. Gobindgarh Fort

Gobindgarh Fort is a historic fort located in the center of Amritsar. The fort was earlier occupied by the army but is now open to the public as a unique live museum, as a repository of Punjab’s history. Some of the main attractions include the Ancient Warfare Museum, Kanda Boldiyan Ne - a show on the story of Gobindgarh Fort, Haat Bazaar, Toshakhana - the coin museum and Sher-e- Punjab - a 7D show on Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
