This 40 Year Old Book Store In Paharganj Has Books In Over 35 Languages

A Roomful Of Happiness 

Also known as the backpackers’ ghetto, the bazaar of Paharganj is home to a tiny little store called Jacksons Books. This treasure mine consists of both new and pre-owned books. The store comes with the happiness of browsing through the countless shelves in here for unlimited hours, a warm host and a nearby subsidiary book store filled with more such gems. This little shop is patronized by Paharganj’s foreign backpackers, which explains the abundance of Lonely Planet guides and also, them specializing in selling books in more than 35 languages, such as French, German, Italian, Spanish, Scandinavian and even Hebrew! For the folks interested in the Indian mythology, philosophy and culture, there’s a large collection of books catering to specifically that, like Amar Chitra Katha, etc. 

Clear The Clutter

The owner Deepak Kumar Dilani tells us that he also buys used books from his customers from Wilbur Smith to John Updike, from Buddha to Aurobindo, from mountaineering literature to poetry anthologies, and this way has built a collection so varied that you’ll find imprints from across the world. One could spend hours turning through old books, and stopping at previously underlined passages, or handwritten notes annotated with dates and place-names, which help map the book’s journey.

And a little fun niblet - the owner also proudly tells us that the much distinguished writer Murakami visited his store while looking for some inspiration in Paharganj, how cool is that?

So, all in all, Jacksons Books has everything from travel books, fiction and non-fiction, latest editions, pre-loved novels, religious books, cookbooks, classics and even comics with the best authors in more than 35 different languages.
