The Upcoming E-Rickshaw Service By The DMRC Will Solve The Last Mile Connectivity Issue, Folks!

This Is A Representative Image

The first thing you’re greeted with when you step out of the Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station is the scene of being ambushed by numerous e-rickshaw drivers shouting at the top of their lungs, creating a commotion to gain your attention. And this is a common scenario at several other metro stations as well. But this development might bring in some much-needed order!

DMRC To Introduce E-Ricks | The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) plans to start e-rick services of its own to regulate their movement and parking. They have tied up with several operators to provide better last-mile connectivity from its stations in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Vaishali! With the commencement of the operations of the regulated e-rickshaws, the DMRC plans to bring order at the metro stations but currently, these services are limited to South-West Delhi & Dwarka.

These e-ricks are expected to ply on a fixed route and won’t be running parallel to the main road or metro corridors. They will provide last-mile connectivity to those areas where feeder buses can’t reach.

Moreover, the commuters will be able to make bookings and payment via mobile applications, that will be developed. Plus, it will also feature one-click SOS in case of emergency - nice! Did you know the DMRC is trying to set up payment of fare through smart cards? Yep, and if space is available then it will also provide an area for the setting up of charging stations and parking for the vehicles.

Providing short loop services between 3 to 4 kilometres, they will be equipped with GPS tracking systems and will also act as hop on & hop off services for neighbouring areas. Apart from being provisioned with first-aid boxes & fire extinguishers, the rickshaws will also be covered in order to ensure safety. A factual nugget - the DMRC introduced 200 e-ricks at 8 stations in Dwarka and some in Vaishali, last year!

Let’s hope this step reduces the chaos created by e-ricks outside the metro stations!
