From Sarojini Ke Dresses To Steve Madden Ke Shoes, Delhi Does It All With Style
Every city comes with its own sense of fashion, thereby making it unique in terms of style and glamour. Mostly a city’s fashion can be described from the way the locals dress on the streets. Delhi’s street fashion is very different when compared with any other metro city as you can see different shades of colors splashed all over the city and the people are seen wearing all kinds of clothes, ranging from simple ethnic and traditional clothes to western wear and the bigger brands such as Gucci and Prada – both real and fake!!
A set fashion sense cannot describe Delhi’s style and taste, here people are more open and aware about ongoing issues/concerns hence the street fashion often becomes a status message or a part of a cause or campaign and usually is inspired by films, politicians and celebrities etc.
Monkey See, Monkey Do
The locals prefer to wear loud, shiny glittering clothes that may be blinding and one of the major reasons behind this is the opulent and larger than life Bollywood movies that they love to ape. Also they are big fans of western trends (who isn’t to be honest!) however the trends arrive here a few months later and they are often over exploited over long periods of time and eventually end up being outdated or out of fashion.
Stereotypes
Delhiites in nature are by and large the biggest show offs whether it is a marriage they are attending or a house party or even just out shopping - they do not dress down for anything! They prefer to wear party clothes, accessorize and look prim and proper all the time.
Delhi’s culture is a vast contribution of the rich Punjabi community as people, despite their origins and culture are often influenced by clothes like salwar- kameez, sherwani and other accessories. Women love to wear tight, fitted clothes, no matter how uncomfortable they might look or feel. Similarly jootis or high heels are always in demand despite the uneven pavements and the constantly on-going construction work on the Delhi roads and streets.
The World of Corporates and Babus
A substantial part of Delhi’s crowd is the corporate world, mostly after the rise of other adjoining cities like Gurgaon and Noida. At places like Connaught Place and Nehru Place, you can observe people in business suits and ties always on the move, chasing their dreams and looking for opportunities.
Delhi is also the administrative capital of India; people from various states come here in search of government jobs. No matter what they are called in their hometown, they are called Babus or officers in India and they wear the simplest of clothes like a shirt, trousers or plain cotton sarees.
Student Junta – The Real Trendsetters
If there is one group that knows what to wear and how to carry it with ease and comfort, it’s the next generation - the student crowd of various colleges and universities who make anything from chappals, torn jeans to loose pajamas, fashionable statements. These students are constantly browsing through the internet, magazines and fashion blogs to see whats “in” so you can always count on them if you are looking for a make-over!
