Score Great Stuff & Fab Bargains @ Amar Colony Furniture Market

A couple of steps inside the Amar Colony furniture market may lead to one of those moments of revelation, a dawn of realization, and might even change your life forever! If we were to describe the place devoid of any exaggerations, it would be fair to say that the Amar Colony furniture flea market is akin to light at the end of the tunnel, a treasure house full of riches, which were perhaps once lost and have now been rediscovered!

A Hidden Gem

Tucked away in some godforsaken part of Amar Colony, in Lajpat Nagar, near the famous gurudwara, the market is a makeshift one where several traders and dealers display their goods under a blue shed, stretching along a lane, at the back of which the workers polish and refurbish the goods.
The furniture and the other goods displayed here for sale constitute both second hand and recycled items, which have been transported from places like Jodhpur, Mumbai, Calcutta, and various regions in the south, and imitations of these very same items which are manufactured by the dealers.

Second Nature

While there are old and new tables, couches, settees, dining tables, wall clocks, paintings, beds, rocking chairs, and other such items for sale, which can be custom made and suited according to your own design, the more interesting items here are the ones which are second hand.

Instead of picking up a magazine rack or a bookshelf from Home Centre, try scouring this furniture market, and imagine holding a magazine rack which might just have treasured history behind it.

The Whimsical Products

There are decorative items, side tables, shelves of different sizes and shapes, keychain holders, wooden holders, paintings, and chests of drawers in an array of designs and patterns, all tilting towards antiques. The wooden items are generally of teak, and if after you buy a great piece, you can easily get it polished and finished according to your wishes.

Like any other flea market, you should definitely bargain and haggle, so as to get the most value out of your money. In addition to furniture, this market also sells various other objects like decorative pieces of brass, statues of buddha, wall hangings, lanterns and lampshades, and a lot of other household-y stuff. The brass would be oxidised so you can get it cleaned, but it would require constant maintenance in your house.
You can find clocks from the Victorian era, lampshades made out of 100-year-old whiskey bottles, telescopes dating back to the colonial years, and even gramophones, so a visit here would ensure that you don’t have to buy these items off Flipkart, and then pretend to be retro.

Cheap & Cheerful

The most fun part about this market is that it sells a number of quirky items that you might gaze at longingly at 'vintage' and 'antique' websites, where they cost a bomb, but may be a lot cheaper here.

Luck might find you a seller who is perfectly versed with the history of each item in his shop, making your day quite enviable- but that is sheer luck!
We strongly recommend a nice half of a sunny day exploring this flea market thoroughly, so you can fill your house with these novelties and heirlooms, which could make for terrific dinner stories.
