IGI Airport Becomes The 1st Airport In India To Have Installed A Sound-Reduction Barrier

This Is A Representative Image

If there’s one thing that residents living near the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport must be fed up of, it would be the noise pollution caused by aeroplane operations. And this long overdue development to curb the same is something to rejoice about!

IGI Airport Gets A Sound Barrier | So, a 1.05-km long wall has been built on the southern side of runway 29/11 and this makes the IGI Airport the only airport in the country to have a sound-reduction barrier. Upon recommendations given by several IIT scholars, a 3.5-metre barrier with noise insulation features was set up over the wall.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), in its order to curb noise pollution at IGI Airport, directed that these noise barriers must be installed across the boundary walls. The airport will also see safety developments with a new fourth runway, which will be about 380 metres away from runway 29 and an elevated eastern cross taxiway for passengers - nice!

These infrastructural improvements for the airport might witness completion by the year 2022 and we can’t wait to see them up and running!
