Feast Your Eyes On The Lush Charbagh Gardens Situated Alongside Humayun's Tomb

If you would like to feast your eyes on the breathtaking beauty of the Islamic flora and the erstwhile Mughal empire’s archetypical landscape, then Charbagh Gardens will provide you with all that and more. Built alongside the famous Humayun’s Tomb, it’s one of the splendours left behind by the Mughal rulers along with other significant monuments that are found nearby.

Laid out in the typical design of Persian gardens, Charbagh - meaning 'Four Gardens', is designed in four square prototypes with further subdivision of squares, making a total of 36. There are water bodies, canals and walkways in these separations and the main squares are divided by two canals and four walkways in the style of Jannat (paradise), as is depicted in Islam.

Greenery Everywhere

The water body in the centre disappears beneath the tomb and rises on the other side in a straight line according to the Quranic verses that say that water runs below paradise. Green grass carpets the sprawling 30 acres of land on which the spacious garden is built.

The tall and wide trees straight away provide much-required shade from the scorching heat. There are lots of flower beds that contain colourful and seasonal flowers that add immense beauty to the garden. One will also come across many fruit-laden trees apart from the famous Cypress trees that dots almost all the Charbagh areas. Also, the water bodies contain sparkling fresh water that appear akin to mini oases in a desert as they cool your eyes in the sultry heat!

The Surroundings

For the convenience of the visitors, two tall gates of 20 feet each open on the Western and Southern side. While the former is still open, the latter has now been closed down temporarily. Three walls of the same height surround this garden for protection and the fourth wall is the Yamuna River. On the Eastern wall and in the centre is the Baradari, a marquee containing 12 doors around the garden which helps extra air to pass into the garden, working as ventilators.

On the Northern side is a hammam (royal bath) that works like a sauna as the water mixes with the heat of the sun and refreshes the visitors. One can also view the famous Humayun's Tomb which is located on the central side of the garden while visiting this garden.

Easily accessible, the garden is located 5 kms Southeast of the famous Connaught Place (CP) and right next to the Humayun’s Tomb, in East Nizamuddin. For an economical ride, one can choose from the options of the metro or bus. Jangpura and JLN Stadium are the closest metro stations.

Come on by for lush, expansive gardens and the opportunity to click some awesome selfies y’all!
