Delhi High Court Urges Policy For Stray Dog Rehab, Aiming For India’s First Stray Dog-Free City!

Every city has its defining ambition - some chase sky-high infrastructure, others dream of becoming tech hubs. Delhi, on the other hand, might just be scripting a very different legacy. A move that could transform how urban India navigates cohabitation with its voiceless residents is quietly underway.

Policy Shift On Strays | In a major move, the Delhi High Court has asked the state government to create a proper policy to shift stray dogs off the streets and into shelters. If done right, this could make Delhi the first city in India to be free of street dogs. The court emphasized that this won’t be a quick removal, but a step-by-step process involving the MCD, the Animal Welfare Board of India, and other agencies working together. This action follows rising cases of dog bites and several court petitions about safety concerns. The court also pointed out that the current method of sterilizing dogs and releasing them back to the streets isn’t working, especially in areas where the stray population is high. Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has spoken on the issue, saying the government is working on a long-term plan that considers both public safety and the well-being of the animals.

Delhi's streets may soon look different, but the real change could be in how Indian cities rethink coexistence.
