It’s December and we can already feel the Christmas vibes in the air. And, what better way to experience the Christmas vibe than visiting the beautiful churches of Delhi adorned with pretty decorations and lit up like stars? You can also dip your feet into some quiet meditation and relish the peaceful atmosphere, or sing along to Christmas carols! So, here’s a list of some churches in Delhi that you defo gotta visit.

1.  Sacred Heart Cathedral Church

Perhaps the most popular church of Delhi, we come across Sacred Heart Cathedral quite often, basically whenever we visit CP. Established in 1935, this familiar red building is ALSO touted to be the biggest church in Delhi. The premises also has a spacious green garden and looks totally bewitching. Time for a visit?

2. St. James’ Church

Located in the old Mughal area of Shahjahanabad, which we now call Kashmiri Gate, St. James Church is the OLDEST church of Delhi, the first one, consecrated in 1836. This majestic, pale yellow church is built in a Greek cross plan with a fine colonial classical architecture and a Florentine dome. It also has vibrant stained glass windows. In short, y’all need to visit this one soon!

3. Centenary Methodist Church

Located in the lavish Lodhi Road area, this church has a sprawling and stunning structure and is one of the most impressive churches in the city. You all must definitely visit this aesthetic church this Christmas season and make your Christmas memorable!

4. St. Alphonsa’s Church

Located in the posh and opulent area of Vasant Kunj, amidst the green farmhouses, St. Alphonsa’s Church is as magnificent as the area in which it resides. When requested, the services are offered in Korean too. The church is named after Saint Alphonsa - the first Indian woman to be canonised by the Catholic Church as Saint. Its glorious architecture is the perfect place to lose yourself in a meditative trance. And the wood detailing with white interiors give a light and airy feeling to space! 5. St. Mary’s Catholic Church

Located very near to the Chandni Chowk Metro station, St Mary’s Church is also one of the oldest in Delhi. Built in 1867, this glorious church has a surreal aura. Even though it is located in the throning lanes of Chandni Chowk, it’s really in a world of its own with unparalleled quiet & serenity. The massive church building is rather majestic, and it also has beautiful pictorial representations of the life of Jesus Christ. So, who are you taking here with you?

6. The Cathedral Church Of The Redemption

Also known as the Viceroy Church for its foundation stone was laid by then Viceroy Of India Lord Irvin, in 1927, The Cathedral Church Of The Redemption is one of the most famous churches in Delhi. Tucked away from the hustle & bustle of the city near the Parliament House & The Rashtrapati Bhavan, this church is just SO elegant and alluring, that you should not miss it. While the exterior is made of red sandstone and appears classy & simple, reflective of the iconic Lutyens architecture, the interior is in their English neo-classical style of design and is definitely a sight to behold! PLUS, the church is especially festive on Christmas when its choir performs carols and musical concerts, so we’re totally gonna head over here!

7. St. Stephen's Church

Located in the bustling and busy area near the Old Railway Station in Chandni Chowk, St Stephen’s Church is one of the oldest churches in Delhi, built in 1862. The rustic, red and graceful building of the church is highly influenced by Romanesque architecture and is built in the typical gothic style. In addition to its ornate walls & ceilings, the church has distinctive stained glass rose windows, unlike all other churches in Delhi. This church is beautifully decorated around Christmas and looks especially lovely!

8. Holy Trinity Church

The Holy Trinity Church is hidden in the busy & dusty ole lanes of Chandni Chowk near Turkman Gate. As soon as you step foot in the complex of the church, it’s like you’ve entered a new and entirely different world! The area is soo peaceful other than the lively chatter of the children playing inside (the complex holds a primary school). The church building is too beautiful for words, with grey stone walls, a Byzantine structure and white domes. All in all, you cannot miss this one!

9. St Thomas Church

Located in RK Puram, St Thomas Church is as distinctively beautiful on the outside as it is from the inside. The brick-walled building has a striking geometrical structure, with arched windows and sloping walls and unique geometry of planes, shadows and recesses can be seen. The inside has coloured and beautifully painted windows, a striking wooden praying area and spacious seating. When are you gonna visit?
