1. Tenet 

Tenet is a sci-fi action thriller directed by the brilliant mind behind Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy and more - Christopher Nolan. The plot revolves around a CIA agent who is part of an extradition operation at Kyiv opera house where things take a turn for the worse, and he soon gets recruited by a secret organisation called Tenet. Considered to be the 5th highest-grossing film in the year 2020, the movie won Best Visual Effects at the 93rd Academy Awards and was also nominated for Best Production Design.

2. Soul 

Soul is an American computer-animated production that follows a middle school teacher who goes on a journey to reunite his soul and his body that are accidentally separated, just before he gets his big break as a Jazz musician. Produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures, the movie won Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score at the Oscars after being nominated for three categories!

3. Nomadland 

Nomadland was the show stealer of the entire academy awards and won the Best Picture Award, Best Director Award and the actress McDormand also bagged the Best Actress Award from a total of six nominations! The story is based on the 2017 novel, Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder and was praised for its great acting, screenplay and cinematography. The story follows a woman who leaves her hometown after her husband dies and becomes a working nomad as she travels across the US!

4. Minari

Minari was another movie that received critical acclaim in 2020 and was nominated for 6 awards at the Oscars, with Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress, with the Korean actress Youn Yuh-Jung winning the title of the Best Supporting Actress - the first from her country. The story is said to be loosely based on the Directors own upbringing and follows a Korean American family who immigrated to the states, Arkansas to be precise in search of their own American dream!

5. Judas And The Black Messiah 

This is an American biographical movie about the betrayal of the Chairman of the Black Panther Party from the Illinois chapter, Fred Hampton, back in the late 1960s by an FBI informant. The film earned 6 nominations for the Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Stanfield. Daniel Kaluuya won the Awards for the Best Supporting Actor and the movie also won an award for the Best Original Song - Fight for You!

6. Pieces Of A Woman

Pieces Of A Woman is a Canadian-American drama film that follows the story of a mother who experienced heartbreaking and traumatic home childbirth, and follows her journey as she grapples with the baby’s loss, isolation from family caused by grief and the following court case against the midwife. The film stars Vanessa Kirby who was also nominated for the title of the Best Actress at the 93rd Academy awards for her brilliant performance!

7. Mank

Mank is a 2020 American Biographical drama film set in the 1930s and provides a different perspective and insight into the Hollywood scene back then through the eyes of an alcoholic screenwriter, Herman J. Mankiewicz, who is scrambling to finish Citizen Kane. The entire movie is shot in monochrome using RED cameras to pay homage to the films back then. The film earned a whopping 10 nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards and won awards for the Best Production Design and Best Cinematography!

This is a Historic American legal drama that follows a group of 7 defendants later dubbed as Chicago 7, who protested against the war with Vietnam and were charged with conspiracy and crossing state lines with an intent to cause riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Featuring an ensemble cast that blew everyone away with their performances, the film earned six nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor!

10. News Of The World 

News of the World is a film based on a novel of the same name written by Paulette Jiles and stars Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel. At the Oscars, the film received nominations for Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Sound. The plot follows an old civil war veteran who finds a 10-year old girl that has been taken in by the Kiowa people who was now being forced to return to her aunt and uncle. He agrees to escort her back and they embark on the dangerous and tiresome journey back with dangers on all sides!

11. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Set in the 1920s, this is an American Biographic musical production based on the play of the same name by August Wilson. The plot follows a blues singer Ma Rainey and her band, who gather at a recording studio in Chicago and the subsequent tensions and fallouts that take place at the turbulent recording session! The film received 5 nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Actress for the brilliant Viola Davis and Best Actor for Chadwick Boseman. They won the awards for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Costume Design!
