10 Cleanest Cities In India Ranked According To The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, 2020


The government of India and the Ministry of Urban Development annually publish the National city Rating under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan scheme and according to the Swachh Survekshan, 2020, which is a survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in cities and towns across India. So here are the top 10 cities in India, according to their ranking, that has topped this list and been proclaimed to be the cleanest cities in the country. Have a look!

1. Indore, Madhya Pradesh

Indore is the largest city in Madhya Pradesh and has been topping the list for the past 3 years now. What discerns it from the other cities is their efficient garbage disposal, waste segregation and conversion of waste to useful products like fuel and compost. Proper sanitation and hygiene in public places also make it one of the cleanest cities! 

2. Surat, Gujrat 

Known as the commercial and economic centre in South Gujrat, Surat was ranked the 2nd cleanest city in India by the survey. Situated on the banks of the Tapi river and known as the Diamond City of India because of the diamond cutting and polishing that takes place here, the municipal government is doing something right concerning cleanliness and curtailing solid waste-based air pollution!

3. Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra

Navi Mumbai came in third on the cleanliness metre and has also been touted as one of the cleanest cities in Maharashtra. Also known by its old name, New Bombay, the city is one of the largest ‘planned cities’ in the entire world and has many recreational facilities and jogging trails and parks which have been kept in the most pristine condition, so it’s ranking on the survey comes as no surprise to us! 

4. Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh

Ambikapur is one of the oldest cities in the state, yet its extremely professional and streamlined approach to garbage disposal and recycling has made its ranking jump ahead by quite a few positions, making it the 4th cleanest city in the country. This year the city received a 5-star rating of ‘Garbage Free Cities’ making it an exemplary example for the other cities in the state! 

5. Mysore, Karnataka

Mysore, already considered to be the cleanest cities in Karnataka, has now bagged the 5th position on the Swachh Survekshan Abhiyan survey 2020. Located in the foothills of the Chamundi Hills, and known for its heritage structures, silk, painting and special variety of jasmine flowers, the city is a pinnacle in maintaining cleanliness in public places. No wonder it has consistently ranked among the top cities in the survey for years now! 

6. Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh 

Vijayawada situated on the banks of River Krishna and surrounded by Indrakeeladri Hills was given the rank of 6th cleanest city in India. Despite being the third most densely populated, urban built-up areas in the world, the city has emerged as a major educational hub in recent times and is expected to be India's 10th fastest growing economy in the world by 2035. It is also ranked as India's 9th most liveable city in India! 

7. Ahmedabad, Gujrat 

Ahmedabad is the largest city in Gujrat and the seat of the Gujarat High Court, and even though it’s been ranked 7th on the list, the municipal corporation leaves no stone unturned to create awareness about waste segregation, maintenance till processing site and treatment and reuse of wastewater, which has been helping the city manage its waste efficiently. The city has also been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under the Government of India's flagship Smart Cities Mission, making it a coveted city to live in! 

8. New Delhi (NDMC), Delhi 

New Delhi, as we all know, is the national capital of the country and seat of all three branches of the government of India, hosting the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House, and the Supreme Court of India, which ensures that the city is diligently monitored for its waste disposal and treatment. It’s thanks to the commendable efforts of the NDMC that has aided New Delhi in climbing up the list and secure the 8th spot on the list! 

9. Chandrapur, Maharashtra

Chandrapur is the 2nd city in Maharashtra to be ranked among the top 10 cleanest cities in India, grabbing the 9th position on the list. Also known as the ‘black gold city’ for its rich coal seams, the municipal corporation in Chandrapur district has been taking careful pains to ensure that the cleanliness and sanitation of the city weren’t neglected, leading to its higher ranks in the survey!

10. Khargone, Madhya Pradesh 

And, we have yet another city in Madhya Pradesh featuring in the top 10 rankings of the Swachh Survekshan 2020. Khargone has over the years consistently ranked very well on the cleanliness metre and this year the city has outperformed its previous ranking, scoring 5158.36 points and finally bagging the 10th spot on the list!
