Educate Yourself About The Colonial Period & British Raj At Fort St. George
Built in 1644, Fort St. George is the first English fort in the country and was used by the East India Company for its trading activities. Currently, it houses the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly and has a long history attached to its name.
A Slice Of History | Standing at a whopping height of 20 ft, Fort St. George was the hub of merchant activity. It encloses a fort museum that displays many artefacts from the British raj era. Some of the objects that are showcased at the museum include coins, weapons, medals, and other relics from England, France, Scotland, and India.
The first floor contains Tipu Sultan’s majestic canons and several portraits of the fort’s former governors. Furthermore, the oldest Anglican church in India is present on the property too! We promise you, there will never be a shortage of history or culture at this marvellous fortress.
