Chennai, or earlier known as the Madras Presidency, was one of the first few places in India to start western formal education and they’ve come a long way! Who knew then that approximately 200 years later, these educational institutes would still be standing tall and carrying forward a legacy, so read on ahead to know more!

1. St. George’s School

Founded in 1715, St. George’s is one of the oldest schools in India. With a simple yet sophisticated red building, this co-ed school is spread over 21 acres of land with a boarding facility, dormitory, kitchen, and playground. CMDA has recognized the school’s chapel and classroom block as a heritage structure, and its library has books dating back to the 18th century. St. George also has one of the best hockey teams in the city and produced players who represented Tamil Nadu and India at various state and national levels.

2. Wesley Higher Secondary School

Wesley School was founded in 1818 by Rev. James Lynch by establishing a small school and chapel. This boys-only school has an excellent reputation for being victorious in football and hockey tournaments. Sri V. Baskaran, an alumnus of the school, and an Arjuna Award and Padma Shri recipient was also the captain of India’s hockey team when it won the gold medal in Moscow Olympics 1980. One would think that’s all, but no. Sri Krishnamurthy, another alumnus, was a member of the Indian hockey team when it won bronze in Mexico Olympics 1968 and Munich Olympics 1972.

3. Madras Christian College HIgher Secondary School

This school was founded way back in 1835. Don’t get mistaken as it is these simple red brick walls of the school which has given a home and nurtured the talents of all its students. The quality of education here has always been sophisticated and efficient, and it is evident in the long list of alumni of this school. 4. St. Mary Anglo Indian School

In 1839, St. Mary’s was the first school to be established by the Catholic Missionaries. This all-boys catholic school operated by the Salesians of Don Bosco and is located on  Armenian Street in CHENNAI! Interesting, isn’t it? This school is known for securing centum results in Board Exams and has taken pride in their quality of education and mentorship since time centuries.

5. St. Patrick Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School

St. Patrick’s School was established in 1875. Brothers of St. Patrick was invited for taking control over the management, who then became the pioneers of the ‘Patrician Brothers’ mission in India. This school has a long-standing legacy in quality education and is one of the few old schools to have become co-ed. With a sharp focus on sports, many alumni of the school have played cricket and football at national Under 15, 17 and 19.
