Head Into The Jungle By Undertaking 6 Best Trekking Trails At Andaman & Nicobar Islands


“It feels so good to be lost in the right direction.” said someone wise! And so, pack your adventure gear, take out your trekking shoes, stuff your rucksacks with a few bottles of water and knick knacks and prepare to head out for the best trekking trails to take on in the Andaman and Nicobar islands. 

1. Mt. Harriet - Madhuban

Mount Harriet is the highest peak in the South Andaman archipelago, whose flora and fauna is unmatched. The national park is home to a variety of endangered species of animals and is also a butterfly hotspot. The trekking trail starts from Mount Harriet and ends in Madhuban, covering a distance of about 16 kms through the captivating woodlands. Experience the magic for yourselves!

2. Chidiatapu-Kala Pahad

As the name suggests, Chidiyatapu is known for its exotic birds and tourists mostly gather around for some serious birdwatching. The trekking trail, however, goes through the forest and ends at the magnificent coastline and up to the Black Mountain (Kala Pahad). The black cliff at the end of the trail looks upon the elongated sea shore which is breathtaking!

3. Havelock-Elephant Beach

This trek will ensure that you explore the famous mangrove vegetation of the islands. The 45 minute trek through the swamp of the mangroves will end at the coral reef beach, Elephant Beach. The trek begins early in the morning and ends in the afternoon. After a short rest at the beach, you can continue with your adventure trip with a quick snorkeling session. 

4. Baratang-Limestone Caves

You reach the site of the caves after a small but adrenaline filled speedboat ride and after a trek of a few kilometers. Yes, the terrain is tricky, the island being marshy and hydrous but all of it is totally worth the sight. The mangroves are a major spot you cannot afford to miss. The trekking trail has small stalls selling food and coconut water and other refreshments, so you needn't carry your own supplies. 

5. Diglipur- Raman Caves

Otherwise known for its picturesque views and the turtle nesting activities, Diglipur has a famous trekking trail as well which has a connected and separated chain of 22 caves that are largely still unexplored! There are limestone caves in this island as well - Raman and Alfred caves which remain undisturbed by the tourism industry’s claws. 

6. Saddle Peak

Located at Diglipur island, Saddle Peak is popular for its lush & evergreen nature trails. The place is home to 13 indigenous birds species, 36 indigenous species of insects, and 6 species of indigenous trees and is rich in biodiversity. At 732 metres above sea level, it is the highest peak of the Andaman and Nicobar islands. Kalpong, the only river of the island flows through it and has the only hydroelectric project in the island.

Trekking is definitely one of the most sought after activities at Andaman so head out into the wild!
